Pope Francis slams ‘cruel indifference’ toward migrants in Europe
Pope Francis has weighed in on Europe’s migrant crisis during a trip to France.
His visit follows rising tensions in recent weeks over how to share responsibility for people arriving on boats from Africa.
This week’s data revealed criminal smuggling activities had quadrupled in Tunisia as more than 120,000 people entered Italy alone.
“We cannot be resigned to seeing human beings treated as bargaining chips, imprisoned and tortured in atrocious ways,” the Pontiff said in an address.
“We can no longer watch the drama of shipwrecks caused by the cruel trafficking and the fanaticism of indifference.”
