Andreescu Out, Federer & Serena Ease Through | Sports Pundit

Former Grand Slam winners Bianca Andreescu and Garbine Muguruza both lost in the first round of the 2021 French Open on Monday while Roger Federer and Serena Williams eased through in straight sets.

Andreescu, who won the 2019 US Open and is still only 20-years-old, was beaten by Slovenian world number 85 Tamara Zidansek in three sets, 6-7 (1-7) 7-6 (7-2) 9-7.

The match was a marathon, with each set going the distance, lasting a total of three hours and 20 minutes for the biggest shock yet.

Muguruza, who won at Roland Garros in 2016, was easily accounted for by 18-year-old Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk 6-1 6-4.

Reigning champion Iga Swiatek is in the same section as Muguruza and got through 6-0 7-5 over Kaja Juvan on center court.

Serena Williams also triumphed on center court, winning 7-6 (8-6) 6-2 over Irina-Camelia Begu, while fourth seed Sofia Kenin also progressed.

In the men’s singles, there were no issues for Federer on his major return, triumphing 6-2 6-4 6-3 over the experienced Dennis Istomin.

“I just felt overall much clearer, much better,” Federer said.

“Overall I’m very happy (with my movement). I can attest to that, as well. I moved pretty well today. I also kept rallies short purposely so I wouldn’t get dragged into the long rallies. Always throw in the drop shot. We’ll see what happens.”

Second seed Daniil Medvedev got past Alexander Bublik 6-3 6-3 7-5, while 13th seed David Goffin and 26th seed Lorenzo Sonego were the major casualties.
