Fellow surfers rescued a man after they spotted him unconscious in the water, California officials say.
Surfers at China Beach in San Francisco were in the water the evening of Nov. 7 when they noticed an unconscious man, according to tweets from the fire department. They pulled the man to a rock and went to shore to call 911.
Rescue swimmers were sent to the scene, and the Coast Guard assisted and provided a helicopter light, the fire department said. Swimmers battled “dangerous surf” to reach the unconscious surfer and pull him to a paramedic rescue boat.
Officials said the surfer received treatment on the boat before he was transported to an ambulance that took him to a local emergency room. He was in critical condition, and officials did not identify him in the tweets.
