A wrinkle in college basketball’s schedule moved Duke’s first game against another top-10 foe back a few days, but its importance to the Blue Devils remains the same.
Normally a season-opening event, the Champions Classic doubleheader slid into the second week of the season so as not to be played on election night.
That means No. 7 Duke and No. 6 Kansas each played two games instead of opening the season against one another.
Now, the time has arrived for them to seriously test one another.
“This is always a game where you get a great gauge for where you’re at,” Duke coach Jon Scheyer said Monday. “Really, you see where you need to improve how you can get better from here.”
Duke (2-0) beat Jacksonville, 71-44, on Nov. 7 in Scheyer’s head coaching debut. The Blue Devils followed that with an 84-38 shellacking of South Carolina Upstate on Friday night.
The reigning NCAA champion Jayhawks (2-0) beat Nebraska-Omaha, 89-64, on Nov. 7 before topping North Dakota State, 82-59, last Thursday.
Scheyer won’t be matching wits with the coach who led Kansas to the NCAA tournament championship last April. Kansas suspended Bill Self for the season’s first four games amid an ongoing NCAA investigation into rules violations.
In 6-8 junior forward Jalen Wilson and 6-1 junior guard Dejaun Harris, the Jayhawks have two players back who started their 72-69 win over North Carolina in the NCAA final.
Duke’s players are eager to play a top team on a big stage.
“This is a program game for us,” Duke sophomore guard Jaylen Blakes said. “This is why you come to Duke to play in games like this. We’ve played two games, we had a scrimmage against Houston, and I think those are all big games. It’s always a big game when we have “DUKE” on your chest. So going into this game, I think that we have to do what we do.”
