‘She brought me luck.’ NC mom scores Powerball prize hours after giving birth

Mere hours after going into labor and giving birth to her daughter, Brenda Gomez Hernandez scored a $100,000 prize on a $3 Powerball ticket, N.C. lottery officials said Thursday.

“I feel like she brought me my luck. I’m so thankful,” Hernandez said when she claimed her prize at lottery headquarters in Raleigh on Wednesday, according to a lottery news release.

Hernandez, a 28-year-old housekeeper from Concord, said she was so happy that she cried after her big win. She bought her Quick Pick ticket at the QuikTrip on Warren C. Coleman Boulevard in Concord.

Her ticket in the Nov. 9 drawing matched the numbers on four white balls and the Powerball to win $50,000, officials said. That doubled when the 2X Power Play multiplier hit, according to the lottery.

Her two sons also brought her luck: She used their birthdays to pick the numbers, she said.

After taxes, she netted $65,015, officials said.

She’ll use most of the money to pay for her house, she said.

Saturday’s Powerball drawing has an $81 million jackpot worth $42.1 million in cash, according to the lottery.
