A camping trip wielded a jackpot lottery win for an Iowa man, who needed help verifying his big win.

Shawn Lafler purchased a Red Hot Riches scratch-off ticket while on a camping trip in Waterloo. It wasn’t until he got back to the campground when he realized he was a $50,000 winner.

“I scratched it when I got back to the campground and I was just like, ‘There’s no way!’” Lafler, 32, told lottery officials.

He said his hands were shaking when he saw what he won. He passed his phone to a friend to make sure the win was legitimate.

“I couldn’t stand still for it to register, so my buddy’s the one who actually checked it on his phone,” Lafler said.

Odds of winning the $50,000 were 1-in-125,835.

Lafler said he is considering using his winnings to pay off his truck and invest.

Waterloo is about 55 miles northwest of Cedar Rapids.
