A father of two won a big prize in Maryland then surprised his brother and wife.

The man’s brother thought he won $50, but the winner scored a $50,000 prize from a scratch-off.

The man, who wasn’t identified, bought two $50,000 Cash scratch-off tickets from a liquor store in Beltsville on his way home from work, the Maryland Lottery said in a July 27 news release.

The first ticket was not a winner. But the second one “had him on cloud nine” when he saw he was a $50,000 winner, lottery officials said in the release.

“I was so happy when I saw the prize beneath the ‘stack of coins’ symbol,” the 39-year-old man told the lottery office.

Then he went home to share the news with his wife and brother.

“He said, ‘I have a surprise,’” the man’s brother told the lottery office. “I thought he won $50 or $500, not $50,000!”

Now the man plans to put his big win toward buying a home.

Beltsville is about 30 miles southwest of Baltimore.
