Authorities fear COVID spread outside Byron Bay hostel could be catastrophic

Police are currently monitoring a backpackers' hostel in Byron Bay which has entered a a snap seven-day lockdown after a guest tested COVID-positive. 

There have been 84 contacts identified at the Aquarius Backpackers resort.

Authorities are warning the situation could become catastrophic if the infection spreads outside the facility as the Byron Shire has one of the lowest vaccination rates in New South Wales.
