Belarus Olympian to go on hunger strike as political protest

An Olympic silver medalist who’s considered one of Belarus’ most lauded athletes says he’s going on a 10-day hunger strike to help victims of political repression within the nation.

Andrei Krauchanka, who medaled within the decathlon on the 2008 Games in Beijing, stated Friday that he is also promoting his European indoor decathlon gold medal from 2011 to assist the households of political prisoners.

Protesters in Belarus spent months final 12 months calling for authoritarian President Alexander Lukashenko to resign, following an allegedly rigged August presidential election that gave him a sixth time period in workplace.

Police cracked down harshly on the protests, arresting greater than 34,000 folks and beating lots of them. Krauchanka was amongst these detained and overwhelmed.

“Real people are sitting behind bars right now – these are their real lives, these are the broken lives of their families,” Kravchenko stated in an announcement about his hunger strike. “It is very difficult for me to digest this terrifying Belarusian reality.”
