Byron Bay hostel in lockdown after positive COVID case

A backpacker hostel in Byron Bay has entered a snap seven day lockdown after a guest returned a positive COVID-19 result.

Eighty-four close contacts have so far been identified at the Aquarius Backpackers resort on the NSW North Coast 
 - with police monitoring the facility to ensure no guests break health requirements.

Ballina MP Tamara Smith fears the spread of infection outside the facility could be "catastrophic".

The Byron Shire has one of the lowest vaccination rates in New South Wales.
