The greatest of them all, Winx, turns 10 on Tuesday and will soon be mated with Pierro at Coolmore Stud.
Winx, arguably the best racehorse of all time, is celebrating her 10th birthday on Tuesday.
Born at picturesque Coolmore Stud in the Hunter Valley on September 14, 2011, she was the product of a mating between Street Cry and Vegas Showgirl.
Of course, no one could have predicted that day that the filly foal was destined for greatness on the racetrack.
“I remember Winx being born, it very straight forward and she was a strong filly weighing 57kg,” said Coolmore’s long-time foaling manager Paddy Sheahan.
“But she had plenty of attitude as a weanling and always had a lot of presence about her on the farm.”
Winx was later to earn world champion status during her extraordinary race career, contesting 43 races, winning 37 including her last 33 races in succession.
She won a world record 25 Group 1 races including her unprecedented hat-trick of George Main Stakes wins (2016-17-18).
Winx was retired to stud after her win in the 2019 Queen Elizabeth Stakes, ending her race career with total prizemoney of $26,451,175, also a world record.
The great mare was mated with I Am Invincible during the 2019 spring breeding season but after a complication free 11-month pregnancy, Winx’s filly foal was stillborn.
Winx was given a year to recover from her ordeal but is ready to become a mum.
The owners of Winx announced recently that their great mare will return to her birthplace at Coolmore and visit champion sire Pierro this spring breeding season.
“It is an absolute honour for all of us at Coolmore to have raised the phenomenon that is the wonder mare Winx at the farm, and to have to have seen the way she engaged and captured the hearts of a whole new generation of racing fans around the world throughout her sensational career on the racetrack,” Coolmore’s Tom Magnier said.
Coolmore hasn’t yet set a date for the Pierro-Winx mating.
