Death over public tap use sparks political row in Midnapore | Kolkata News – Times of India

Midnapore: A brawl over getting water from a public tap resulted in a 43-year-old man’s death in Midnapore town on Tuesday, sparking a political row as the family claimed the victim was an active BJP worker.
Trouble broke out at Barabazar area under ward 10 of Midnapore Municipality while Basanti Seal was collecting water from a tap near her home. The family members of one Swapan De started abusing and thrashing her. Hearing her cries for help, husband Debashis Seal rushed out. He, too, was beaten badly and died on the way to Midnapore Hospital.
Basanti lodged a complaint at Kotwali police station against De and his family, saying her husband had started getting threats after the Bengal assembly polls. She also claimed that Debashis had been under pressure to join Trinamool. Police rounded up four people, including three women, in this connection.
BJP district president Soumen Tiwari alleged that the BJP booth secretary had been beaten to death by Trinamool workers. “This is a post-poll violence incident. We demand a CBI investigation,” he said.
Trinamool district president Sujoy Hazra, however, said BJP was trying to give a political angle to a “dispute between families” that had resulted in an unfortunate death.
