Tamil Nadu: Death toll in stone quarry accident goes up to two


In Tamil Nadu, the death toll in the stone quarry accident in Tharuvai village of Tirunelveli district has gone up to two. The incident occurred last Saturday night, as a huge boulder fell on the quarry site triggering a landslide trapping six people. Four of them were rescued after intense efforts by the NDRF, Fire and Rescue personnel and the mining experts. 

Two of them succumbed to their injuries, while the other two are undergoing treatment. Efforts are continuing for the third day today to rescue the other two who are still caught inside the quarry. 

The state government has announced a solatium of ten lakh rupees each from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund to the families of the two youth who lost their lives. Its statement says another five lakh rupees each will be disbursed from the funds of the state Labourers Welfare Board.
