Deschamps: Switzerland More Than a ‘Banana Skin’ | Sports Pundit

France boss Didier Deschamps has heaped praise on their Euro 2020 last-16 opponents Switzerland is far more than a “banana skin”.

World champions France meet Switzerland in the Euro 2020 Round of 16 on Monday in Bucharest, with a quarter-final date against either Croatia or Spain up for grabs.

France topped a difficult Group F, claiming five points from three games, edging out Germany 1-0 in their opener before draws with Portugal and Hungary.

Switzerland finished third in Group A but have a strong recent history at major events, reaching the last 16 at Euro 2016 and the past two World Cups.

“It’s not a potential banana skin,” Deschamps said. “It’s a Round of 16 match with a quarter-final place at stake.

“We were favourites before the competition but both me and my players are aware of the quality of this Swiss team.

“They have strengths and are capable of good things. They’re not 13th in the FIFA rankings for nothing. That’s down to the team and their coach, Petkovic, who has done very good work in his time in charge.”

The Swiss boast top players including captain Granit Xhaka, Breel Embolo, Remo Freuler and Liverpool attacker Xherdan Shaqiri.

France have a few injury headaches too, with Lucas Digne unavailable, as well as Marcus Thuram and Jules Kounde.

Switzerland head coach Vladimir Petkovic said: “Despite all the external talk, everyone is speaking as if we dont have a chance, we believe in ourselves.

“We need to show what we can do on the pitch. Were here and we want to keep living our dream.”
