Barbie Honours U.K. Space Scientist Dr. Maggie Aderin-Pocock With Special International Women’s Day Doll

To mark International Women’s Day on Wednesday 8th March 2023, and British Science Week – which runs from 10 – 19th March, Barbie is honouring British space scientist and educator Dr. Maggie Aderin-Pocock with its latest Role Model doll. Dr. Aderin-Pocock is a former President of the British Science Association and is best known for presenting BBC One’s ‘The Sky at Night’ as well as her work looking deep into Space with the James Webb telescope. Her one-of-a-kind Barbie wears a starry dress reminiscent of the night sky and comes with a telescope accessory for stargazing. The science educator’s story is particularly inspiring, as she had an unsettled upbringing and initially struggled in school due to dyslexia – despite being exceptionally bright. She says, “a government statistician would have forecast a pretty bleak future for me.” However, an obsession with the space-set stop-motion animation The Clangers and Star Trek sparked her ambitions, and her father nurtured her hopes and dreams. Due to hard work she attended Imperial College London, obtaining a degree in Physics and then her PhD in Mechanical Engineering. Since then she has helped design instruments ranging from handheld landmine detectors to an optical subsystem for the James Webb Space Telescope. Speaking about her new Barbie, Dr. Aderin-Pocock says: “As a child growing up, I played with Barbies, and I still do now with my daughter. When I was little, Barbie didn’t look like me, so to have one created in my likeness is mind-boggling”
