Film director Vasu passes away at 72

HYDERABAD: Yesteryear filmmaker K Vasu, who is known for directing Chiranjeevi in his debut film ‘Pranam Khareedu’ in 1978 breathed his last on Friday. He was 72. Vasu passed away at KIMS Hospitals, where he was admitted a few days ago for a kidney-related ailment.

Vasu also helmed ‘Joker Mama Super Alludu’ (1992), the first and one of the very few films that had Brahmanandam as its lead actor. He had a memorable, commercially successful stint in the film industry through the 80s and 90s, particularly garnering acclaim for making theological biopics like Sri Shirdi Sai Baba Mahatyam (1982) and Ayyappa Swamy Mahatyam (1992).

He is also known for directing Chiranjeevi in multiple films, including ‘Thodu Dongalu’ (1981), which also featured Krishna, along with ‘Allullu Osthunaru’, where Chiranjeevi shared screen space with Chandramohan. ‘Aadapilla’ (1991), ‘Puttinilla Mettinilla’ (1973), ‘Pakkinti Ammayi’ (1981), ‘Kalahala Kapuram’ (1982) and ‘Kothala Rayudu’ (1979) are some of his other noteworthy directorials.Vasu’s mortal remains will be taken to his Film Nagar residence from the hospital on Saturday morning and final rites will be performed at Mahaprasthanam.
