Gas station engulfed in flames after driver rams pump, North Carolina officials say

A large fire broke out at a North Carolina gas station after a driver crashed into a pump, officials said.

On the night of Saturday, Nov. 20, the driver of a pickup truck traveling west on Hickory Tree Road in Davidson County ran off the road and slammed into a gas pump at the Circle C Mart, Trooper Ned Moultrie with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol told McClatchy News.

The driver then crashed into the store, according to a news release from the Davidson County Fire Marshal’s office.

The crash caused a fire that engulfed the building, and firefighters from multiple agencies were called to the scene around midnight, the fire marshal’s office said Tuesday, Nov. 23.

Photos shared by the Griffith Fire Department, which responded to the scene, showed the damage to the building.

Moultrie said the fire caused “significant damage” to the building. But no one, including the driver, was seriously injured, according to fire officials.

The driver was arrested and charged with driving while impaired and failure to maintain lane, Moultrie said.

No other information had been released as of Wednesday, Nov. 24.

Davidson County is about 110 miles west of Raleigh.
