Halle Bailey Makes a Splash in the First Trailer for The Little Mermaid

While West Side Story’s Rachel Zegler is gearing up to play Snow White in Disney’s reimagining of its first-ever animated picture, Halle Bailey is putting her own spin on Ariel for The Little Mermaid 2.0—which, quite frankly, blows every other Disney remake out of the water in terms of casting (pun intended).
Halle, one half of the Beyoncé-approved musical sister act Chloe X Halle, will play everyone’s favorite mer-teenager, Javier Bardem will appear as her clueless single mer-father, King Triton (“As long as you live under my ocean, you’ll obey my rules!”) and Melissa McCarthy will take a turn as the Hans Christian Andersen tale’s real heroine, Ursula. Lending their voices to animated versions of Flounder, Scuttle, and Sebastian, respectively? Room’s Jacob Tremblay, Awkwafina, and Hamilton’s Daveed Diggs. Most exciting of all, Lin-Manuel Miranda is working with the original film’s composer Alan Menken to breathe fresh life into the musical numbers, not to mention penning original songs.
And now, after a teaser of Halle’s angelic Ariel singing “Part of Your World,” the official trailer was premiered during the Oscars, introduced by Halle—fittingly dressed in a blue Dolce & Gabbana princess gown—and McCarthy themselves. Talk about making a splash.
