Thiruvananthapuram: Police in Lakshadweep on Thursday registered a case against filmmaker Aisha Sultana with charges of rioting and hate speech.
The FIR has been registered against the filmmaker over the complaint of BJP Lashadweep wing president C Abdul Khader Haji.
According to the complaint, Aisha Sultana claims during a news debate on a Malayalam channel that the center used COVID-19 as a ‘bio-weapon’ against the inhabitants of Lakshadweep.
The case was registered in the Kavaratti Police Station under Sections 124A, 153B of IPC.
The FIR against Sultana comes at a time when there is an uproar against Lakshadweep administrator Praful Khoda Patel over the new reforms introduced by him, which according to people are against the interests of the islanders.
People are protesting against, among other things, the draft legislation such as the regulation of Lakshadweep Prevention of Anti-Social Activity (Goonda Act), Lakshadweep Animal Preservation Regulation and Lakshadweep Panchayat Regulation, 2021.
Patel, who was appointed as the administrator of Lakshadweep in December 2020, is facing
opposition to policies he had instituted from the union’s residents and politicians, both from within Lakshadweep and the neighboring state of Kerala.
