Liberals have shown ‘breathtaking incompetence and indecision’ in defence policy

Sky News host Nicholas Reece says the Liberal Party has displayed “breathtaking incompetence and indecision” in Australia’s defence policy.

Mr Reece said Australia is “paying the price” for having six defence ministers in eight years, and three prime ministers in three terms.

“While China has risen, increasing its military capabilities and naval power dramatically, Australia has floundered,” he said.

“This lack of leadership and indecision at the top of the Abbott-Turnbull-Morrison governments has cost far more than the $2.4 billion spent on submarines that will never be built.

“Seven years after Australia opened talks to buy a fleet of conventional submarines, the government now wants nuclear submarines but does not know which ones.

"As of today, Australia has no agreement with anyone to build any new submarines whatsoever.

“We simply have a government intention to purchase a nuclear-powered sub using either a US model or a UK model.”
