Federico Chiesa (I) celebrates scoring the first Italy goal (1-0) at the Italy v Austria

Italy boss Roberto Mancini says he believed their last-16 clash with Austria was going to be tougher than the quarter-final which looms against Portugal or Belgium.

Italy scored twice in extra-time to claim a 2-1 victory over Austria and their spot in the last eight at Euro 2020.

But the Azzurri were made to sweat after Austria had a goal disallowed for offside in normal time, before Federico Chiesa broke the deadlock in the 95th minute, with Matteo Pessina adding another.

“I knew this was going to be tough, probably tougher than the quarter-final,” Mancini told RAI Sport.

“Games can take the wrong bent, but we played well and deserved it.

“This test can do us good, we had to show a strong mentality.”

Both Chiesa and Pessina came off the bench to score the crucial goals, delighting Mancini about the depth at his disposal.

The players who came off the bench had the right mentality and stepped straight into the match to change the game,” he said.

“Those who came on were extraordinary after those who came off had already given everything they had.”

Italy will play either Belgium or Portugal in London in the quarter-finals.
