Milos Raonic Receives Wild Card to Play at Los Cabos | Sports Pundit

The Canadian player has been awarded a wild card into the Abierto de Tenis Mifel, tournament director Geoffrey Fernandez announced on Friday.

The ATP 250 is held between July 19 to 24 in Los Cabos, Mexico, at its new venue, the multifunctional Cabo Sports Complex (CSC).

We are very pleased to share that we will award a WC for Milos Raonic at the Los Cabos Open,” said Fernandez on his official Twitter account.

Canada’s Milos Raonic had not contested an official tournament since the Miami Open presented by Itau in March, where he lost to Hubert Hurkcaz in the fourth round.

The eight-time ATP titlist sustained a calf injury, which has forced him to withdraw from two majors this season, the French Open and Wimbledon.

It is a pinnacle in my schedule each and every year,’’ ranked No. 22 wrote on his Instagram account back in mid-June.

I was working hard preparing many of the recent tournaments. On the second to last day, I hurt my calf. I have been working hard to heal it but had a minor setback.

Therefore, I won’t be ready for Wimbledon. I will be working hard to get back as soon as possible.’’

The 30-year-old, a finalist at Wimbledon in 2016 – lost to Andy Murray – also withdrew from the Tokyo Olympics.

It is always the greatest honor to represent Canada on any world stage, and to miss that opportunity is not easy. I am still working hard to be ready to play as much tennis as I can this summer as I recover and begin to ramp up my training.”

Adding: “I wish all the amazing Canadian athletes all the best through the Olympics.”

The first Canadian to break into the top 10 (2013) would be making his first appearance at the Abierto de Tenis Mifel since the ATP Masters 1000 event in Florida, United States.

The fifth edition of Los Cabos Open features the likes of former world No. 3 Grigor Dimitrov, American John Isner (33), 2021 Queen’s Club finalist Cameron Norrie, Taylor Fritz (40), Frenchman Adrian Mannarino, and NextGen ATP Final contender Sebastian Korda.

Los Cabos 2017 champion Sam Querrey, 2016 Rio Olympics medallist Steve Johnson, Argentinian Guido Pella (59), South Africa’s Kevin Anderson, Denis Kudla (114), three-time ATP titlist Italian Andreas Seppi, Australia’s Jordan Thompson, Mackenzie McDonald (108), and Colombia’s Daniel Elahi Galan also join the field.

The 2019 champion, world No. 11 Diego Schwartzman, will not be present to defend the title.

In 2020, the tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 outbreak; this year, the event takes place behind closed doors, allowing a limited number of staff and sponsor’s guests (who must show a negative antigen test) to attend.

Los Cabos serves as preparation for the players in the lead-up to the fourth and last Grand Slam of the season, the US Open, held from August 30 to September 12.
