Washington: More than 37 million Americans are expected to travel during Memorial Day holiday weekend, as U.S. tourism has increased significantly after more than a year of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The expected strong increase in demand from last year’s holiday, which fell during the early phase of the pandemic, still represents 13 percent, or nearly 6 million, fewer travelers than the Memorial Day holiday in 2019.
Booking data also shows that domestic travel and road travel are the biggest drivers for travel recovery in the short term, with Orlando and Las Vegas as the best Memorial Day destinations this year.
‘As more people the Covid-19 vaccine and consumer confidence are growing, Americans are showing a strong desire to travel this Memorial Day, ‘said Paula Twidale, senior vice president of AAA Travel.
With more than half of the American adult population vaccinated and new Covid Mark Vitner and Charlie Dougherty, economists at Wells Fargo Securities, believe that things are falling back fast, airline travelers, hotel reservations and attending tourist attractions.
‘The increase in travel is taking place along with a significant increase in economic activity. Decrease Covid risks, multiple rounds of fiscal stimulus and more than a year of pent-up demand are all coming together to generate an increase in consumer spending, ‘the economists wrote in an analysis on Friday.
Another factor is the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)’s updated guidance that fully vaccinated people can travel domestically at low risk for themselves.
