Number of younger hospitalised COVID-19 patients a ‘wake-up call’

New South Wales Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant says the number of younger people needing hospital care as a result from COVID-19 is a "wake-up call" the virus does not only severely impact the elderly.

Dr Chant said out of the 37 people currently in hospital, 14 are under the age of 55, saying the information should “dispel the myth" the virus "only affects" elderly people.

“Of those (14), eight are under the age of 35. Again, dispelling that myth that it only leads to hospitalisation for the elderly,” she said.

She said another important detail is that out of the seven people in ICU, one is in their 30s.

“A bit of a wake-up call to young people.”
