Parramatta Council CEO earns more than the prime minister: Murray

Sky News host Paul Murray says Australian councils have increased taxes by billions in the past years – with some council executives getting paid more than or close to the prime minister's annual salary.

"Across Australia there are 537 councils ... and they make a lot of money," Mr Murray said

Mr Murray said according to statistics from the ABS they had an increase of tax by almost $4 billion.

"So in 2014 it was $15 billion and in 2019 it was almost $20 billion – the best part of $4 billion dollars."

Mr Murray said councils had complained they were getting "starved from cash", particularly in NSW.

"Well here's an idea to some local councils ... perhaps what you can do is just take a little, a little haircut to the people who work in the office of the council.

"Australia's prime minister Scott Morrison gets paid $549,250, the CEO of the Parramatta council in western Sydney is paid $633,000.

"Are we all paying attention, one runs the country one runs the council in western Sydney."
