Peridot: Know the precious gem which Cleopatra used

It is the ‘stone age’ of a different sort now. People are increasingly taking to precious stones – both for vanity and for a dash of luck.

As per gemmology, the birthstone of those born in August is peridot. It is also known as the poor man’s emerald. Peridot is also the national stone of Egypt. Queen Cleopatra had Peridot in her collection of gems.

The colour of Peridot could vary from a hue of pure green to yellow-green to greenish-yellow. According to gemmologists, the finest shade is green without any hint of yellow or brown.

The stone is made of magnesium, iron, nickel, and chromium. It is worn by people as a substitute for emerald. Peridot, in itself, has unique qualities. It is known as the gem which brings peace and tranquillity. The belief is that it saves one from despondency and isolation. It brings cheer, love, energy, vigour, and friendships. Gemmologists say the peridot also is ‘a path to wealth’ and prosperity. Those who wear peridot are bound to save more, they say.

On the health front, peridot is supposedly good for the respiratory system, liver, and intestines. It is believed to ward off thyroid, neuro disorders, and skin issues. It is also advised for students as peridot helps in memory retention.

The stone is largely available in countries like the US, Myanmar, Pakistan, China, Sri Lanka, and India.

As per Indian astrology, peridot can be worn by those born in the ‘lagnas’ of Edavam, Mithunam, Kanni, Thulam, Makaram, and Kumbham.

Those born in the stars Ayilyam, Thriketta, and Revathi can also use this stone. Peridot works well for those with lucky number 5. Those born on the dates 5, 14, and 23 of any month can use it.

Peridot can be worn on the middle finger of either hand for maximum benefit. It can also be worn on the small finger of the left hand. It can be worn as a ring or a locket. If it is used as a locket, it should touch the area of the heart.

The belief is that the adverse effects of Sani (Saturn) and Mercury can be countered with peridot.
