Are they, or aren’t they? Actor Paul Mescal and singer Phoebe Bridgers are reported to be engaged—a tidbit that was quietly mentioned in The Guardian‘s profile on Mescal today. While the engagement has yet to be officially confirmed by the pair (and such rumors have been swirling for some time) fans are flocking to Twitter to process the news.
The couple first met through social media in 2020. At the time, Bridgers wrote a tweet exclaiming, “Finished Normal People and now I’m sad and horny.” (Mescal stars as Connell on the hit Hulu series.) Mescal replied to the tweet, “I’m officially dead,” and in his profile for The Guardian, Mescal said he and Bridgers continued to send each other flirty DMs, which eventually lead to their now full-on relationship.
Though they have since kept a low profile, Mescal and Bridgers have made a few red carpet appearances, including at this year’s Met Gala, “In America: An Anthology of Fashion.” Mescal has also appeared in the singer’s music video for “Savior Complex.”
Though the Internet is to thank for the couple’s meet-cute, Mescal revealed today that he has since quit using any social media. “I just don’t think it’s particularly useful for people to see, like, literally you,” he says. “I thought it’s either get off the bus now or stay on it, and I wanted to get off. In 10 years I might rue the day I threw out my social media, but look, it just is what it is.”
Surely Mescal isn’t regretting his social media abstinence today! See below for the best reactions to the reported engagement.
