Police commando, civilian shot dead in Manipur’s pre-poll violence

Two people including a Manipur police commando were shot dead by unknown assailants at Wangoi in Imphal West district on Monday.

The irate local people of the areas blocked the road on Monday and burnt tyres to protest the killings.

A senior police official who does not want to be named told ET, “Unidentified gunmen came in the car and fired while two people were talking. The deceased is identified as Abujam John 57 and Abujam Tomba 37.”

He added an operation was launched to nab the culprits. This is the first incident in the state after assembly polls were announced in the state recently. The Election Commission has announced two phased polls in the 60-member assembly. The assembly elections would be held in Manipur in two phases on February 27 and March 3.

Chief Minister N. Biren Singh and Agriculture Minister Oinam Lukhoi visited the area and met the families of the victims.

Biren said, “The violence was perpetrated by the vested interests of people who do not want peace in Manipur and are trying to get the political advantage ahead of the elections.”

An Assam Rifles was killed and another injured when two improvised Explosive Devices (IED) were detonated in Thoubal district last week. On November 13 last year an Assam Rifles Colonel, his wife and son, and four jawans of the para-military force were gunned down in Churachandpur district bordering Myanmar.
