At long last, Cruella, the prequel to the 101 Dalmatians starring Emma Stone as a young Cruella de Vil rollicking around and raining evil on London in the 1970s, has arrived on Disney Plus. On top of giving us more background on how one of Disney’s most infamous villains came to be, the film is also a delicious moodboard for bold punk makeup. It’s no coincidence considering that new wave icons Debbie Harry and Siouxsie Sioux helped inform de Vil’s black, white, and red-themed approach to punkish smudgy eye makeup and blood-red lips.
This jolt of rebellious above-neck peacocking comes at a fitting time as punk beauty attitudes permeate everything from the runways, like the Chanel resort 2022 show where inky cat eyes, swirls of bright red blush, and lip piercing jewelry (a tribute to the late Stella Tennant) ruled, and the pop star world, see: Willow Smith’s “Punk Picasso” aesthetic and Due Lipa’s recent head-to-toe Vivienne Westwood ensemble, for which she paired a sky-scraping bouffant with ’80s hot pink blush at the 2021 Brit Awards.
