Republicans argue the ‘catastrophe’ unfolding in Afghanistan could have been avoided

Republicans are saying the Taliban’s rapid takeover of Kabul and the catastrophe unfolding across Afghanistan could have been avoided.

It appears the Taliban is now firmly embedded in Afghanistan’s capital of Kabul after fighters entered the city overnight and commanders claim the group has taken control of the presidential palace.

US Representative Liz Cheney said, “the catastrophe that we’re watching unfold right now across Afghanistan did not have to happen”.

“And it’s not just that people predicted that this would happen, everyone was warned that this would happen.”

Just last month US President Joe Biden said he was confident the Afghan government would stand after the US withdrawal of troops.

“The likelihood there’s going to be the Taliban overrunning everything and owning the whole country is highly unlikely,” he said.
