Review into teacher education courses to ensure ‘evidence-based practices’ are taught

Education Minister Alan Tudge says the review into the nation’s teacher education system is looking to ensure teachers are “as effective as possible” by being taught “evidence-based practices” and not “a bunch of fads”.

Mr Tudge told Sky News the fads which were introduced into teaching methods are more to blame for the decline in education standards over the past 20 years than the rise of technology in the classroom. 

“For example, phonics got pushed aside in favour of whole language in relation to teaching,” he said. 

“Child centred learning became predominant when explicit instruction is shown to be much more powerful in actually getting results.

“That’s squarely in my focus with our review of teacher education courses … to ensure that it’s actually evidence-based practices which are taught … so that when the students come out and they’re fully qualified teachers they can be as effective as possible in the classroom”.
