SC103 Fall 2023 Ready-to-Wear Collection

It’s good to be two. At SC103, duality is a boon both to founders Sophie Andes Gascon and Claire McKinney and the fans with whom they materially extend their dialogue.

Instead of a show this season, the designers boxed up their fall collection, secured it with logo tape, and sent it off to a friend in California and asked her to wear it in her world. “It felt really nice to see the clothing in its most natural world on people,” noted Gascon. It’s not the first time that the team has experimented in this way, letting others tell the brand’s story, though when the clothes came back East some of them were also photographed around New York City.

SC103’s collection seems to evolve organically and in ways that are personal to the two founders. McKinney’s been teaching a tailoring class, which likely informs the sartorialisms in the fall lineup, such as a rustic fitted woolen jacket with red-stitched buttonholes, threads left hanging. It stands in contrast to the all-out bohemianism of a crochet dress pierced with embellishments, which could almost double for textile art. Ditto a rich green satin jacket that’s been quilted in such a way that it resembles the contours on a topographic map. The inside is as beautiful as the outside.

That inside/outside dichotomy might be the key to understanding SC103. The quilted jacket is a record of the intimacy established between maker and material within the security of four walls, and it carries interiority with it as it goes out into the world where it belongs, and where Gascon and McKinney cede control of it. There’s a freedom in letting go, be that by letting the materials dictate the outcome, making space for imperfections and irregularities, or asking a friend to style themselves. “Once we finish something, it’s not meant to just be looked at or put away, it also is meant to live in the world and to be thrown around. When we shipped the collection to our friend Danny, we said, ‘Don’t worry if anything happens, it’s just clothes.’ We can do this again, nothing is that serious in our eyes either.”

A hand-dyed red dress with a triangular yoke at the chest and an asymmetric button closure was seriously chic. The same goes for a gingham fronted vest paired with coordinating cargo pants with the ease of pajamas. And their no-waste bags remain the rage. SC103 brings handwork and authenticity to the table, and that’s not something that can, or should, be ignored.
