At Simone Rocha, Twisted Curls and Appliqué Ribbons Add a Dose of Whimsy

Inspired by the rituals surrounding Lughnasadh, the festival of harvest in Ireland, Simone Rocha fall 2023 was a visual feast of macramé, weaving, raffia, and embroidery—a mishmash of textures that was echoed in the hair and makeup.

“Simone’s youthful vision gives myself and my team the space to take a less traditional route with makeup, from playing with adornment on the face and body to using our fingers instead of brushes,” says makeup artist Thomas de Kluyver. “The casting this season is particularly diverse, so we wanted to focus on individuality, capturing the moment when you first pick up makeup products and play.” Taking his cues from the youthful whimsy of the collection, the individual beauty of each model was enhanced by small adornments, using colors and textures taken directly from the collection and applied to each face—including pairs of bows made out of red, black, or white ribbon. “In some circumstances we are also applying products and then taking them off to give the make-up a worn-in quality.”
