Karnataka Health and Medical Education minister Dr. K Sudhakar has said that stringent measures are taken to screen passengers arriving from high-risk countries where Omicron variant has spread rapidly. Speaking to media persons in Bengaluru today, the minister said that the virus spreads rapidly and caution is of utmost importance.

He said that the new variant B.1.1.529 known as Omicron is the cause for the recent surge in cases in South Africa, United Kingdom and 10 other countries. Those arriving to the state from these countries are kept under home quarantine and monitored closely.

All the passengers from international destinations are screened and tested. On being detected with the virus, they are isolated in hospitals and tested again on the eighth day.

The minister clarified that there is no decision taken for compulsory institutional quarantine for the international passengers as wrongly reported by a few media channels. Dr. Sudhakar said that the Government will soon announce guidelines for Christmas and New Year celebrations to avoid the spread of the pandemic.
