Parliament adjourned for the day over Pegasus protests

Lok Sabha

Lok Sabha on Thursday passed two bills before the proceedings were adjourned for the day amid continuous protests by opposition members over the Pegasus spying row and farmers’ issue.

The Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India (Amendment) Bill 2021 and The Inland Vessels Bill, 2021 were passed without debate.

When the House met at 2 pm, Kirit Premjibhai Solanki, who was chairing the proceedings, took up the two bills.

He urged the protesting members to go back to their seats.

Amid the din, Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia moved the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India (Amendment) Bill, 2021.

Similarly, Ports, Shipping and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal moved the Inland Vessels Bill, 2021, which seeks to provide safety of navigation, protection of life and cargo and prevention of pollution that may be caused.

Earlier in the day, Speaker Om Birla had expressed his displeasure over the unruly behaviour by some opposition members, and said he was “very hurt” over Wednesday’s incident.

On Wednesday, when papers were being laid in the House, Congress members Gurjeet Aujala, TN Prathapan, Hibi Eden and some others had thrown business papers of the day as well as torn pieces of paper and placards at the Chair.

A piece of the torn placard landed in the press gallery just above the Speaker’s podium.

As the Opposition continued their protest on Pegasus snooping controversy and three farm bills, Birla adjourned the House till 11.30 am.

After the Question Hour ended at 12 noon, Rajendra Agrawal, who was chairing the proceedings of the House, asked protesting members to go back to their respective seats.

“We are starting Zero Hour, please go back to your seats,” he appealed to the members. Soon after he adjourned the House till 12:30 pm.

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, said the opposition has not been able to put forth its point due to the stubborn attitude of the government.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said the members, who resorted to tearing papers, don’t even want to apologise. P

Rajya Sabha adjourned for the day

The Rajya Sabha proceedings were adjourned till Friday amid continuous protests by opposition parties over the Pegasus snooping controversy, farm laws and price rise.

After the House resumed after lunch at 2 pm, the government introduced the Factoring Regulation (Amendment) Bill, 2021.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman introduced the bill amid the protest and sloganeering by the Opposition members and said it will provide relief to the micro, small and medium enterprises sector.

The bill will help the sector ensure a smoother capital cycle and healthier cash flow, she added.

Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh, who was in the chair, asked the agitating Opposition members, who had trooped into the Well of the House, to return to their seats.

He called the members to participate in the discussion on the bill.

However, barring those from the ruling BJP, AIDMK and TRS, who supported the bill, no one turned up for the discussion.

Singh then called Sitharaman for her reply and the bill was passed.

After that the deputy chairman adjourned the House till Friday 11 am.

Every year, July 29 is celebrated as the International Tiger Day to raise awareness around the need for tiger conservation around the globe. The global population of the magnificent big cat were declining for over a century.

Tigers have been severely affected by man-made problems like illegal poaching and wildlife trade, habitat loss and human conflict.

As awareness increased, conservation efforts have reaped some rewards. The population of tigers globally today stands at 3,900.

Where are the tigers in the world today?

The tiger footprint has dramatically decreased and today their range is limited to only seven percent of the area they originally covered. Tigers today live in the wild in grasslands and isolated forests in 13 countries.

As per WWF, the population of tigers in India, Nepal, Bhutan, Russia and China is either stable or increasing as per best available information. However, tiger population is “still in crisis in some areas, including much of southeast Asia.”

India is home to 70 percent of the world’s tigers in the wild. On International Tiger Day 2021, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated the country’s commitment to the cause of tiger conservation.

Work left to do

In an ambitious move, WWF has put forward a target to not just save the tiger but double its population to more than 6,000 by 2022, which is also the Chinese year of the Tiger.

However, a big problem his juvenile mortality in tigers with 50 percent of all cubs not  surviving for more than two years.

For National Chicken Wing Day, here are 12+ of our favorite wing shops in the Triangle

Smoked, grilled or fried, it’s National Chicken Wing Day. Here are some of the top picks in the Triangle.

jleonard@newsobserver.com

The chicken wing contains multitudes.

Be it dressed up with smoke and spice, fried until crispy, or tossed in tangy, nuclear orange Buffalo sauce, there’s no wrong way to wing.

This Thursday, July 29 is National Chicken Wing Day, a day to celebrate one of the world’s favorite finger foods.

Due to the pandemic and supply chain issues, chicken wing prices are often higher these days, more than twice what they were at the beginning of the year, fetching around $150 for a 40-pound box.

That means chicken wing prices have gone up at some favorite wing shops. Mark Dundas of Heavenly Buffaloes in Durham said his popular wing shack and restaurants ate the higher costs for more than a year, expecting the price to fall. When it never did, he said wing prices had to go up too.

“We tried to maintain our pricing for as long as we could,” Dundas said. “We had to put prices up to make it viable for us to sell chicken wings.”

Heavenly Buffaloes and some other popular wing restaurants also put chicken thighs on the menu. Dundas recommends going with a dry rub instead of sauce to keep the chicken skin crispy.

“The thighs rejuvenated our wing business,” Dundas said. “They’re not going away.”

Whether it’s thighs for now or wings forever, here are some of the Triangle’s top spots for chicken wings.

Apex Wings

518 E. Williams St., Apex. 919-387-0082 or apexwings.com

The peak of good winging, perhaps? The list of sauces is long and complex at this popular Apex wing shop, but spice lovers will find their hands full.

Aviator Smokehouse

525 E. Broad St., Fuquay Varina. 919-557-7675 or aviatorbrew.com/smokehouse

Aviator has built an empire of beer, barbecue and pizza in Fuquay-Varina. Perhaps the wings deserve a spot of their own, smoked and then fried.

Boricua Soul

705 Willard St., Durham. 919-902-0520 or boricuasoul.com

The wings at this Durham spot on the American Tobacco campus blend fruit and spice, flavored with jerk seasoning or “Guava lava.”

Buffalo Brothers

Five locations in Wake County. buffalobrothers.com

This Wake County wing shop has roots in Buffalo, the birthplace of the classic chicken wing.

Dame’s Chicken & Waffles

530 Foster St., Suite 130, Durham. 919-682-9235 or dameschickenwaffles.com

There’s a balance to chicken and waffles, the sweet with the salty and plenty of room for spice. But these wings can stand on their own — with or without a waffle.

Heavenly Buffaloes

1807 W. Markham Ave., Durham. 919-237-2358 or heavenlybuffaloes.com

2816 Erwin Road, Suite 205, Durham. 919-797-2456

407 W. Franklin St., Chapel Hill. 919-914-6717

What began as a shack is now a chicken wing empire. Heavenly Buffaloes used to draw wing fans from all over the Triangle to Durham, then it added a Chapel Hill location. And during the pandemic it expanded again, adding a second Durham location. The long list of sauces can be mixed, but know that anything hotter than “hot” really means it. All locations are giving our free beer coozies for National Chicken Wing Day.

Hummingbird

1053 E. Whitaker Mill Road, Suite 111, Raleigh. 919-301-8900 or hummingbirdraleigh.com

Since day one, this Raleigh brunch star has had its garam masala rubbed wings on the menu, now served with togarashi ranch and lime butter. Let’s hope they never leave.

M Kokko

311 Holland St., Ste. B, Durham. 919-908-9332 or m-restaurants.com/m-kokko

This is the hidden-away restaurant everyone knows about. The “KFC,” or Korean fried chicken wings, have a lot to do with that, coming in garlic soy or spicy and as crispy a wing as you’ll find anywhere.

Soo Cafe

2815 Brentwood Road, Raleigh. 919-876-1969

This Korean restaurant gets its wings extra crispy with two dips in the fryer. Sauces include soy and ginger and “Old Fashioned” which is what most Korean fried chicken fans will recognize for its blend of heat and sweet.

Viceroy

335 W. Main St., Durham. 919-797-0413 or viceroydurham.com

The Jeera wings at this downtown Durham Indian restaurant are rubbed with cumin and roasted until crispy. When they say “hot” they mean it, but that searing ache from the spice won’t be enough to keep you from reaching for another wing. Then another.

Wooden Nickel Pub

113 N. Churton St., Hillsborough. 919-932-0134 or thewnp.com

Due to the chicken wing shortage, one of the Triangle’s busiest spots for wings has pivoted to fried chicken. That fried chicken can be tossed in any of the Wooden Nickel’s sauces or dry rubs — and should hit the spot until the wings return this fall, owners say.

Woody’s Sports Tavern & Grill

8322 Chapel Hill Road, Cary. 919-380-7737 or woodysportstavern.com

Wings are what Woody’s does best, and the bone-in baskets at this Cary sports bar are routinely named among the favorites in the entire Triangle. Sauces include takes on the classics, like buffalo and sweet barbecue, but look for dry rubs like Old Bay and a blackened Chipotle on the grilled wings.

Zweli’s

4600 Durham-Chapel Hill Blvd., Suite 26, Durham. 984-219-7555 or zwelis.com

There’s only one kind of wing at Zweli’s, a grilled, flame-kissed Piri Piri version that likely won’t have you looking elsewhere.

‘Devastating day.’ 2 dead, 30 injured in chemical leak at Texas plant, officials say

Two people died and dozens more were injured when a chemical leaked at LyondellBasell facility in La Porte, Texas, officials say.

Google Maps

Fifty tons of acetic acid leaked at a Texas plant Tuesday, leaving two people dead and 30 more injured, officials say.

The leak at LyondellBasell in La Porte was reported at 7:35 p.m. Tuesday and all individuals inside the facility at the time are accounted for, according to site manager Stephen Goff. Out of the 30 people who were injured, one person suffered serious burns and the others had respiratory complications, Goff said in a news briefing streamed by KTRK.

LyondellBasell describes itself on its website as “one of the largest plastics, chemicals and refining companies in the world.” Its facility in La Porte is about 25 miles east of Houston.

The leak occurred in a unit that had been partially shut down due to planned maintenance, according to the site manager. The leak of 100,000 pounds of acetic acid was quickly stopped and is believed to have been contained.

“Yesterday was a devastating day for our site and our La Porte family,” Goff said Wednesday.

The current conditions of the employees hurt are unknown and the identifies of the two people who died have not been publicly disclosed. The cause of the leak is being investigated.

The Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office said late Tuesday the leak was isolated and air monitoring showed no impact to the surrounding communities.

Prolonged skin contact to acetic acid can cause tissue destruction, according to the Virginia Department of Health. Mild inhalation can trigger irritation of the eyes, nose and throat while a more severe inhalation can cause lung irritation and skin damage.

“No one ever wants an incident like this to happen and when it does it has an effect on us all,” Michael VanDerSnick, senior vice president of LyondellBasell, said during Wednesday’s briefing. “We will found out what led to this release and will work to understand how it happened to prevent a situation like this from ever happening again.”

Harris County Judge Linda Hidalgo said late Tuesday she is “heartbroken to hear of the two fatalities.”
