Victoria entering snap lockdown based on ‘advice’ not ‘popularity’

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews says his government has made the decision to enter a seven-day snap lockdown based on medical “advice”, not what is “politically convenient”.

Mr Andrews told reporters seven days was the “advice, and we follow the advice”.

“We will be guided not so much by what is politically convenient or popular, we will be guided by what the science tells us".

Mr Andrews added the snap lockdown approach is the “new normal” until Australia reaches vaccination targets of 70 or 80 per cent.

“That’s not just Victorian government policy or my policy, that is endorsed by the Department of Treasury at a national level as being less costly to all of us in the long term than being locked-down for months,” Mr Andrews said.

“It is the National Cabinet endorsed position.”
