Victoria lockdown likely to be extended

Victoria’s acting premier has given the biggest indication yet that the state’s seven-day lockdown may be extended saying the situation may well “get worse before it gets better”.

There are now 51 active cases in the state and Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton said the current lockdown - which is due to expire on Friday - is being re-evaluated on a daily basis.

The emergence of a mystery case and the 420 exposure sites are factors which could contribute to the lockdown being extended.

Regional Victorians have called for an exemption to any further restrictions because there are no cases out in the regions.

However, the police union said it is opposed to reimposing the “ring of steel” around Melbourne because it would take police away from more important duties.
