West Bengal State Election Commission (WBSEC) has decided to defer civic body polls to February 12, 2022 due to Covid rise.

In a notification the WBSEC said today, the municipal elections in Asansol, Bidhannagar, Siliguri and Chandannagar, which were scheduled to be held on January 22, 2022, have been postponed to February 12, 2022.

The Calcutta High Court had yesterday asked the state EC to consider postponing civic body polls by four to six weeks, in view of sharp Covid rise.

WBSEC had asked the state government to make its stand clear on the issue and West Bengal government said that they have no objection to defer the civic body polls.
