What to Watch This Weekend? Here Are 3 Recommendations

To mark what would have been the vaunted Indian filmmaker’s one hundredth birthday (he was born on May 2, 1921, and died at 70 in 1992), the Criterion Channel has curated a beneficiant collection of his works, amongst them Pather Panchali (1955) and Aparajito (1956) of his vital Apu Trilogy; 1958’s The Music Room (cited by Roger Ebert as having “one of the most evocative opening scenes ever filmed”); and the 1964 drama Charulata (centered on a devastating efficiency from Madhabi Mukherjee, who labored with Ray thrice). As the Japanese auteur Akira Kurosawa as soon as opined, “Not to have seen the cinema of Satyajit Ray means existing in the world without seeing the sun or the moon.”
